day trips from Barcelona 4-Days Itineraries Gallocanta; the crane spectacular

Gallocanta; the Crane spectacular

Birding from Barcelona. The Gallocanta Lagoon, placed at South-west of Aragó, is a unique wetland where we can find a wide variety of waterfowl. Although it is of interest all year round it has become an important bird area during autumn and winter, when thousands of cranes concentrate there along their passage and winter time.

Day 1. Transfer from Barcelona to our accommodation in Gallocanta. During the afternoon we will explore some unknown corners of the lagoon to watch the variety of birds living there and, at the evening, we will see the amazing crane spectacle entering to the laggoon to sleep. The number of them can vary from some hundreds up to 10.000.

A WONFERDUL TIME TO ENJOY THE CRANE SPECTACULAR IS LATE FEBRUARY, WHEN UP TO 50.000 OF THEM CONGREGATE HERE

Day 2. Raising time is a very special moment as thousands of cranes start to move from their resting place inside the lagoon to the farm lands around. We will enjoy this unforgettable moment form an unique view point. We will spend most of the day looking for some of the specialities living around the lagoon, including Stone Curlew, Thekla Lark, Calandra Lark, Bonelli's Eagle, Golden Eagle, Hen Harrier, Bluethroat or Merlin.

Day 3. This day, after enjoying the Crane spectacular in the morning, we will try for the elusive and secretive Dupont's Lark in a nearby patch. Pin-tailed Sandgrouse can also appear here along with Lesser Short-toed Lark, Red-billed Choughs, Little Owl and Iberian Grey Shrikes. Short-eared Owls are also a winter visitor, although scarce. At sunset we will go back to the lagoon to see thousand of Cranes to come in to roost.

Day 4. In our way back to Barcelona, we will make some stops in the way. Our main target will be the small populations of Great Bustards living East of Zaragoza. There we will also have more chances for Sandgrouses (both Black-bellied & Pin-tailed) but also Golden Eagle. A final stop in a lagoon may produce Bluethroat, Penduline Tit, Western Swamphen, and even Moustached Warbler.
