birding in Barcelona 4-Days Itineraries Gallocanta; the crane spectacular

Gallocanta; the Crane spectacular

Birding from Barcelona. The Gallocanta Lagoon, placed at South-west of Aragó, is a unique wetland where we can find a wide variety of waterfowl. Although it is of interest all year round it has become an important bird area during autumn and winter, when thousands of cranes concentrate there along their passage and winter time.

Day 1. Transfer from Barcelona to our accommodation in Gallocanta. During the afternoon we will explore some unknown corners of the lagoon to watch the variety of birds living there and, at the evening, we will see the amazing crane spectacle entering to the laggoon to sleep. The number of them can vary from some hundreds up to 10.000.

A WONFERDUL TIME TO ENJOY THE CRANE SPECTACULAR IS LATE FEBRUARY, WHEN UP TO 50.000 OF THEM CONGREGATE HERE

Day 2. Raising time is a very special moment as thousands of cranes start to move from their resting place inside the lagoon to the farm lands around. We will enjoy this unforgettable moment form an unique view point. We will spend most of the day looking for some of the specialities living around the lagoon, including Stone Curlew, Thekla Lark, Calandra Lark, Bonelli's Eagle, Golden Eagle, Hen Harrier, Bluethroat or Merlin.

Day 3. This day we will enjoy of Great Bustard big flocks around the lagoon. Here we can expect flocks of Black-bellied Sandgrouse as well as Little Bustards. Here there are also good options for Red-billed Choughs, Little Owl and Iberian Grey Shrikes. Short-eared Owls are also a winter visitor, although scarce. At sunset we will enjoy of the crane spectacle over the lagoon again.
