Raptors & Steppe birds

Birding near Barcelona. There are a few mountainous massifs in Lleida's Pyrenees that can boast being the only European spot hosting four nesting species of vulture; Griffon, Cinereous and Egyptian Vultures as well as Lammergeier. Its ravines and cliffs provide an incredible setting allowing us to find not only crowds of raptors but also warblers, woodpeckers and other birdlife (more). Lleida Steppes is a mix of landscapes where larks and warblers songs become a commonplace. Its extensive wheat fields, scrub lands, pinewoods, orchards and relictual steppe spots support an wide variety of birdlife (more).

Day 1. We will explore lonely hills covered by beautiful Mediterranean scrubs, wheat fields, steppe lands and pinewoods expecting to find Little Bustard (central image), Stone Curlew, Great Spotted Cuckoo, Roller (third image), Calandra Lark, Black Wheatear, Orphean Warbler, Ortolan.. This is also a land of raptors; Black Kite, Red Kite, Short-toed Eagle, Golden Eagle Montagu's Harrier can be easily seen. During the day we'll have time to visit some wetlands supporting Black winged Stilt or Purple Heron in summer and a variety of waterfowl in winter. That season also gives us a chance to see the magnificient Eagle Owl and the elusive Wallcreeper.


Day 2. Explore extensive Scots Pine forests, alpine meadows, ravines and rocky slopes where raptors usually rest or look for prey. During the day we would expect to find Bearded Vulture (above), Cinereous Vulture and Egyptian Vulture (below) as well as Golden Eagle and Booted Eagle. Bonelli's Eagle is far more scarce. Other raptors include Peregrine Falcon, Goshwak and Red Kite.

The awesome coniferous forests and cliffs are home to a number of birds including Black Woodpecker, Alpine Swift, Blue Rock Thrush, Rock Thrush, Chough or Rock Sparrow. Wallcreeper and Alpine Acctentor are winter visitors.

  • Winter: Merlin, Hen Harrier, Eagle Owl, Alpine Accentor, Wallcreeper, Red Kite, Alpine Chough, Hawfinch, Yellowhammer.
