Spain in Spring


Spanish Sparrow, one of the most typical birds living at the famous "dehesas"Birding in Spain. Spain is offering some of the best birdwatching in Europe. This birding tour explores a wide variety of habitats in Central Spain. We'll explore the famous evergreen open oak forests along with scrub lands, wooded gorges, large wetlands, cereal-steppes and more.

We will look for the specialities living in Central Spain, including some Iberian endemics such as Spanish Imperial Eagle, Spanish Magpie or Iberian Flycatcher along with Black-shouldered Kite, White-rumped Swift, Common Rock Thrush, Marbled Duck or Cinereous Vulture!

  • Day 1. "La Mancha Húmeda". Meet and wellcome in Madrid Airport or in another place previously agreed. This first day we will explore the variety of endorreical wetlands South of Madrid and called "La Mancha Húmeda". Here we will look for both Marbled & White-headed Ducks along with Penduline & Bearded Tits and a variety of Warblers, Grebes and waders. Here Sandgrouses are likely to appear as coming to drink water from the cereal steppes around.

  • Days 2 & 3. Tietar Valley.  The Tiétar Valley is a huge valley covered by open evergreen oak forest. Here we will look for many good specialities such as Spanish Magpie, Cinereous Vulture, Spanish Imperial Eagle, Black Stork and some scarcer ones including Great Bustard and Black-shouldered Kite among many more!

  • Day 4. Gredos Mountains. The calcarian landscape of Gredos Mountains hosts a good number of interesting birds including the Southermost nesting population of Bluethroat in Europe along with Citril Finch, Common Rock Thrush, Bonelli's Eagle and Ortolan Bunting. During the afternoon transfer to Monfragüe.

  • Days 5 & 6. Monfragüe. Monfragües is one of those places needing no presentation. Considered as one of five best places in Europe for raptors, Monfragüe hosts good populations of Cinereous, Egyptian & Griffon Vultures along with Spanish Imperial, Bonelli's & Booted Eagles. Black Storks, Rollers and Great Spotted Cuckoos are common along with a good variety of warblers and larks (Wood & Thekla Larks; Spectacled, Subalpine & W Orphean Warblers). Really good birds here include White-rumped Swifts, Iberian Flycatchers and, maybe, Rüppell's Vulture!

             This program may be adapted according to weather conditions to maximise best use of time.

What weather conditions should you expect

We suggest you to bring sunglasses, a cap and sun screen. Clothes should be generally thin but it is important to inlcude at least one sweater or similar; its use would be necessary in both mountains and steppe-lands.
